With so many options, how do I choose the right safari experience for me?
Planning a luxury safari can feel overwhelming, with so many destinations, lodges and itineraries to consider. Our specialists take the time to understand your preferences, interests and travel style, and curate a personalised safari tailored to you. We offer this service at the same rate as booking direct, so you get expert guidance without any markup.
How do I know which safari operators I can trust?
We only partner with reputable lodges and operators that meet the highest standards of quality, safety and sustainability. Every partner is personally vetted by our team for service, conservation ethics and consistency. If something unexpected happens before, during or after my safari, will someone be there to help?
Yes. We are reachable before you travel, while you are on the road, and after you return. Your specialist stays on WhatsApp throughout, so you have a single number for everything from a flight schedule change to a question about a lodge's cellar.
How does it work? What is the process to book a safari?
You start with an enquiry, either through Start Planning, a specific lodge or itinerary page, or by emailing us directly. Share your travel dates (even approximate), party size and the destinations or lodges that have caught your eye. A specialist will reply, talk through options, confirm availability and flights, and send a provisional booking for payment. Once your deposit clears, we share the details with the lodges, airlines and transfer partners, and activate your travel insurance. Throughout, we are with you every step of the way.
Have your specialists actually visited the lodges they recommend?
Yes. Our team has been in the industry for years and has first-hand experience of the lodges and operators they put forward. We send specialists on safari frequently so the recommendations stay current. Many of those visits are written up in the blog if you would like to see for yourself.
Pricing, payment and cancellations
Is it cheaper to book directly with the lodges?
No. Lodges and operators are required to sell at the same industry rate, whether you book direct or through a specialist. We are paid a commission by the lodges when our clients stay. Booking direct typically means dealing with a lodge reservations team that is not equipped for bespoke requirements and does not coordinate flights or transfers. With us, you get the same lodging rate plus a single specialist handling everything around it.
Can you handle flights and transfers as well as the lodges?
Yes, we handle everything. Internal flights, road transfers, charter aircraft, lodge connections. You receive a single travel pack that joins it all together, and your specialist is reachable from the first message to the day you come home.
I have found a better price somewhere else. Will Safari.com match it?
Because lodges and operators sell at the same rate, a meaningfully better price is unusual. When it does happen, we will match it. See our best price guarantee for the detail.
What is your payment policy?
A 50% deposit confirms a booking. The balance is set by the payment schedule of the lodges in your itinerary, and we send reminders when it falls due. Your specialist will set out the exact schedule before you commit.
What is your cancellation and refund policy?
Until 25th May 2026, our complimentary travel insurance aims to make your booking fully refundable, regardless of when you cancel. Outside that, our standing terms are: flights are non-refundable; cancellations 61+ days before travel forfeit 25% of the total; cancellations 60โ31 days before travel forfeit 50%; cancellations within 30 days forfeit 100%. Some lodges and peak seasons have stricter terms, which we will make clear before you confirm. We may also pass on a 5% admin charge on credit card or bank transfer refunds; transaction fees are non-refundable.
Travel insurance
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Africa is far from home, the flights are long, and the trips deserve a safety net. Until 25th May 2026 we include complimentary BRONZE cover with every booking made and paid for in full. See our travel insurance page for the full breakdown.
What does the included BRONZE cover?
Trip cancellation up to R85,000 per person, emergency medical and evacuation, missed connections and travel delays, lost or delayed baggage, theft, and rental vehicle excess. The policy is underwritten by SATIB, our local insurance partner.
Can I upgrade for higher limits or "cancel for any reason" cover?
Yes. GOLD adds political and natural-disaster evacuation. GOLD + BUY UP 2 (also known as CFAR โ Cancel For Any Reason) is the highest tier. Pricing is on the CFAR calculator at /travel-insurance-cfar, and your specialist will help you choose.
When does the policy start?
Cover activates on receipt of your deposit and issuance of the official policy documents. To avoid any gap, please send the required traveller details to your specialist as soon as possible after paying.
On the ground
Is travelling to Africa safe?
Africa is a safe holiday destination, especially for safaris. Most travellers fly to airstrips close to the reserves and are transferred straight to the lodges, where you only interact with a small number of people. We employ expert guides, use modern vehicles and monitor conditions throughout. With travel insurance included, you also have cover for cancellation, medical and a range of other scenarios outside your control.
